TREATMENT

Standardised treatment programmes have been developed in line with the latest research and according to International and National treatment principles and standards. SANCA offers treatment on a continuum of care from screening, assessment, medical treatment and therapeutic treatment for services users and families as well as aftercare services.

​

  • A comprehensive SANCA Treatment Model was developed called 'Ukwelasha’ (which means treatment in iSiZulu) to ensure effective service delivery.

  • A SANCA Outpatient Manual is available for emerging SANCA organisations to implement the treatment programmes for adults and adolescents.

  • Comprehensive group work programmes called ‘Change or Be Changed’ and ‘Key-to-Life’ are examples of the programmes offered.

  • All medical services have been standardised through the SANCA Medical Manual, a detoxification regime for Alcohol, the SAAMS opioid treatment guidelines as well as substitution therapy guidelines.

  • The impact of treatment services is measured using STES (SANCA Treatment Evaluation Scale) developed by the University of Johannesburg as well as the DSM 5 Assessment tool for diagnosis developed by WITS University, SANCA also makes use of an Impact assessment tool to measure abstinence and change in behaviours over a two-year period for each client. 

  • Aftercare is he most important part of treatment and, therefore, we have developed a SANCA aftercare APP powered by Android Smart Phones for service users as well as a structured aftercare programme called 'New Beginnings'.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & PREVENTION SERVICES

Standardised prevention programmes are offered to reduce and prevent the harmful effects of substances on children, adolescents, youth and adults in all communities where SANCA services are accessible. 

 

These SANCA prevention programmes include:

  - ‘Boogie Woogie’ puppet shows for 4 to 9-year-olds.

  - ‘Shatterproof’ puppet shows for 10 to 14-year-olds.

  - ‘Life is A Choice’ for adolescents (Peer Education Programme).

  - ‘Kemoja’ for all school learners and out-of-school youth.

  - ‘Can You Hear Me Now’ for the prevention of FASD targeted at pregnant women.

Community development programmes are implemented in rural, semi-urban and rural areas using the CADCA (Community anti-drug coalitions of America) strategy and 7 coalitions have been successfully established. 

 

The ‘Never Give Up’ programme for community development workers and volunteers emphasises building resilience in communities to strengthening partnerships and the sharing of community resources. 

​

The ‘Stand Up’ programme is tailor-made for both emerging organisations and SANCA members and focuses on internal operational processes and systems.

 

The governance training programme is offered to these organisations to ensure good management practices are implemented for the accountability and sustainability of the organisations.

RESEARCH SERVICES

All treatment data is captured on the SANCA Office website to identify treatment trends using the SACENDU forms and STES forms.

 

SANCA has a longstanding partnership with the MRC to capture and collate the treatment data for statistical purposes. SANCA regularly engages with different Universities forming part of the research being conducted at these institutions throughout the country.

 

Currently, SANCA is conducting an inhouse research project on the use of cannabis by the service users for the past year. Academic articles are being published as well as articles and press releases on latest media concerns that are raised.

WORKPLACE INTERVENTIONS

The SANCA Workplace Intervention Policy and five workplace programmes were developed to provide standardised services to businesses in all the provinces. The aim is to empower employers and educate employees in addressing substance abuse problems in the workplace and to utilise specialist providers such as SANCA to as a support structure within the employment sector for both the employer and the employee.

 

The following workplace interventions can be offered by SANCA:

- Reviewing or developing a company policy and procedure to manage SUD in the workplace

- Substance use Awareness campaigns to create safer work environments

- Employee Substance Abuse Educational Programmes to reduce some of the negative impacts on the workplace

- Wellness days and exhibitions to promote healthy lifestyles

- Supervisors and Managers Training programmes for early detection and basic interventions

- Onsite or Offsite assessment, counselling, referrals to resources for individuals by professionals specialising in the treatment of substance use disorders

- Onsite or Offsite support and other groups for returnees

- Workplace testing

- Specialist services, e.g. trauma work/ relationships, etc.
